Let’s be honest about the word “helper.”

When most people hear that God created Eve as a helper for Adam, they imagine a junior assistant.

They picture someone fetching coffee, taking notes, or filling in the gaps where Adam was deficient.

The English word helper feels thin, passive, and subordinate.

But the Hebrew text tells a completely different story.

The word God uses in Genesis 2:18 and 2:20 is עֵזֶר (Ezer) .

This is not a word of domestic servitude.

It is a word of military might and divine rescue.

Look at where else the Bible uses Ezer.

Psalm 20:2 says, “May he send you help from the sanctuary” — that word is Ezer.

Psalm 33:20 says, “Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield” — again, Ezer.

Hosea 13:9 says, “You are destroyed, O Israel, because you are against me, against your “helper” — Ezer.

In more than 80 percent of its Old Testament uses, Ezer refers to God himself acting as a rescuer, a shield, and a stronghold.

God is the ultimate Ezer.

So when God says he will make an Ezer for Adam, he is not creating a subordinate.

He is incarnating a divine attribute.

He is giving Adam a human version of himself.

Eve is Adam’s divine intervention.

And the text gets even richer.

God says Eve will be an Ezer Kenegdo — עֵזֶר כְּנֶגְדּוֹ.

Kenegdo means “corresponding to him” or “as in front of him.”

Think of a mirror.

Think of a counterweight.

Think of a second set of eyes looking at the same problem from a different angle.

Adam is the gardener of the garden, but a lone gardener cannot see the back of his own head.

He cannot see his own blind spots.

Eve is not the tool he uses; she is the person who stands face to face with him to save him from his own limitations.

She is the strength of his hand because she is the wisdom in his peripheral vision.

Now let’s talk about Proverbs 31.

Most people hate this passage because they have been taught it is a to-do list for “good Christian wives.”

It has been weaponized to exhaust women.

But the Hebrew title of that passage is not “The Good Wife.”

The Hebrew title is אֵשֶׁת־חַיִל (Eshet Chayil) .

Chayil is the word for army, wealth, strength, valor, and might.

Eshet Chayil literally means “Woman of Valor” or “Woman of War.”

It is the exact same semantic field as Ezer.

Proverbs 31:10–31 is an acrostic poem.

In Hebrew poetry, an acrostic — where each line starts with a successive letter of the alphabet — is a way of saying, “This subject is complete from A to Z.”

Nothing is missing.

The poem is a public tribute sung at the city gates, as verse 31 makes clear.

It is not a private checklist.

It is a coronation anthem.

Notice the verbs the poem uses.

She considers a field and buys it (verse 16) — that is financial agency.

She perceives that her trading is profitable (verse 18) — that is economic intelligence.

She opens her mouth with wisdom (verse 26) — she is a theologian and a counselor.

Strength and dignity are her clothing (verse 25) — these are royal garments.

The climax of the poem is not “her children call her blessed.”

The climax is verse 31: “Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.”

Her husband is not her master.

He is her fan.

He sits in the gates — the place of judgment and power — and he is known because of her reputation.

He does not complete her; she launches him.

People focus on “she rises early” and “she does not eat the bread of idleness.”

But they miss the forest for the trees.

This poem celebrates a woman who runs an import-export business (verse 14, “like merchant ships”), manages real estate, employs staff, and dominates the textile market.

If a man did these things, we would call him a CEO.

Because a woman does them, we call her a “helper.”

The translation has lied to us.

So why did God create Eve?

Not because Adam was lonely in a way that required a servant.

Not because Adam needed a subordinate to organize the leaves.

God created Eve because Adam was incomplete, and only a strength corresponding to him could make him whole.

Eve is not the rib; she is the Ezer.

She is not the assistant; she is the Chayil — the army.

Proverbs 31 is not a leash; it is a scepter.

When we call a woman an Eshet Chayil, we are not politely saying she is a nice homemaker.

We are saying: You are the strength of his right hand. You are the rescue he did not know he needed. You are the image of God’s own helping presence, walking in linen and courage.

The fall in Genesis 3 twisted this design into domination.

But the original design in Genesis 2 and the redeemed vision in Proverbs 31 are clear:

To be a “helper” is to be the strongest thing in the room.

History, in its cruelty, forgot her name. The Gospel refers to her simply as “the woman from Samaria.” For two thousand years, we have reduced her to a stereotype: the woman with five husbands, the sinner, the outcast who came to draw water alone because she was not welcome in the company of “good” women.

But we have been reading her story wrong.

We have been so focused on her past that we missed her future. We have been so busy counting her sins that we have failed to witness her apostolic fire. When this unnamed woman met Jesus at Jacob’s well, she received living water and became a source of faith for an entire nation. She engaged the Messiah in the longest theological dialogue recorded in the New Testament. She became the first evangelist to the Gentiles. And the Church, finally recognizing her magnitude, gave her a name worthy of her legacy: Photini—the “Enlightened One.”

The Noonday Encounter: A Dialogue for the Ages

It was the sixth hour. High noon. The time when the sun is merciless and shadows disappear.

In the ancient world, women drew water in the cool of the morning or the evening. It was a social ritual, a time of laughter and gossip. But this woman came alone, under the scorching heat, because community was a luxury she could no longer afford. She felt like an outcast in her own village, haunted by failed relationships that left her lonely and empty.

And yet, seated upon the well—waiting for her—was a Jewish man. This was the first shock. Jews did not associate with Samaritans. They considered them half-breeds, heretics, unclean.

“Give me a drink,” He said.

It was a breach of every social protocol. A Jewish man speaking to a woman in public? Unthinkable. A rabbi speaking to a Samaritan? Forbidden. A holy man speaking to this woman? Scandalous.

However, Photini stood her ground. She did not cover her face and run. She stood her ground and pushed back.

”How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?”

She was sharp. She was brave. She was not afraid to question the divine.

Jesus, pleased by her passion, replied with a mystery: “If you knew God's gift and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

Thus began the longest, most theologically rich conversation Jesus ever had with a single soul.

She engaged Him in a debate on political matters, specifically the tensions between Jews and Samaritans. She engaged Him in a theological discussion about the true location of worship: this mountain or Jerusalem? She challenged His claims and pressed Him for answers. She was not a passive recipient of grace; she was an active participant in revelation. When Jesus looked at her troubled life and revealed her truth—“You have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your own”—He did not condemn her. He provided undeniable proof of His identity.

He revealed to her that He was the Messiah.

Think of the weight of that moment. Jesus had silenced demons with a word. He had confounded the Pharisees. But to this woman—this nameless, shamed, Samaritan woman—He spoke plainly:”I who speak to you am he.”

The Abandoned Jar: A Symbol of Transformation

The text says she left her water jar.

It is a tiny detail, easily missed, but it is the hinge upon which the entire story turns.

She came to the well for one reason: to get water. It was her purpose, her task, her survival. When she came face to face with Jesus, everything she valued was turned upside down. The jar—weighty, made of clay, and bound by time—suddenly felt insignificant. She had found a spring that would never run dry, and she couldn’t carry it alone.

She ran.

She ran back to the very city that had rejected her. She ran toward the people of color whose judgment she had been hiding from. She strode through the gates, proclaiming her testimony with unwavering confidence. She stood in the middle of the town square and declared:

”Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”

Do you see the audacity? She held up her broken past—the very thing that defined her shame—as evidence of His glory. “He knows everything I ever did,” she said, “and He loves me anyway. He stayed with me anyway. He revealed Himself to me anyway.”

Scripture says that “many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony.”

She was the first apostle to the Gentiles. Before Peter preached to Cornelius and Paul traveled the world, a woman from Sychar brought her entire town to Jesus.

From Photini to the Arena: The Fire That Could Not Be Quenched

From that moment onward, Scripture remains silent about her. But the voice of the Church, echoing through tradition, tells us that her fire never dimmed.

She was named Photini, meaning “the enlightened one” or “the luminous one,” because she was so filled with the light of Christ that it radiated from her. Tradition holds that she traveled far beyond Samaria, carrying the Gospel to Carthage in North Africa, and eventually to Rome.

It was in Rome that she met her final adversary: Nero.

The mad emperor, who had already tortured Peter and Paul, summoned Photini and her sons to his court. He tried to seduce her with promises and intimidate her with threats. He surrounded her with his philosophers and his daughters, hoping to break her resolve with logic and luxury.

He failed.

Photini, the woman who had debated Jesus at the well, debated the philosophers of Rome and converted them. Her fire spread to Nero’s own daughter and her servants, who abandoned the palace to follow Christ.

Furious, Nero commanded that she be subjected to torture. They beat her. They ripped apart her flesh. They threw her into a dry well to die slowly.

But the woman who had once come to a well in shame, now descended into a well in glory. She had spent her entire life moving from the physical water of Sychar to the living water of the Savior. In that dark pit, waiting for her martyrdom, she was not afraid. She was finally home in the deep, eternal spring of His presence.

A Call to Leave Our Jars Behind

Photini’s story is not just an ancient curiosity; it is a blueprint for discipleship.

She teaches us that our deepest shame is the very ground of our greatest ministry. The mistakes, failures, and secrets we hide are what Jesus wants to use to reveal His identity. He does not need our perfection; He needs our testimony.

She teaches us that women were not silent bystanders in the early Church. They were theologians, evangelists, and apostles. They carried the water of life to a dying world, often at the cost of everything.

And she teaches us that one encounter with Jesus is enough to reroute a life. A single conversation with the Savior can transform an outcast into an evangelist, a sinner into a saint, and an unknown woman into the “Enlightened One.”

So, what is your water jar?

What heavy clay vessel are you still carrying that makes you return to old habits? You need to let it go to embrace the good news.

Today, Photini stands at the edge of the well, pointing the way. Her eyes are bright. Her feet are swift. Her voice echoes across the centuries:

The "Prize Pet" Phase: A Parade of Inclusion

When she first joined the all-white senior leadership team—indeed, as the only Black employee in the entire company—the initial reception was overwhelmingly positive, to the point of being performative. Her immediate supervisor, a white woman, became her most vocal champion. She was paraded around to clients, investors, and other departments not just for her expertise, but as a living, breathing testament to the company's "commitment to diversity."

Her ideas were celebrated, her presence was highlighted in newspapers, and her every minor success was amplified. For the first 90 days, she existed in a golden haze of being the "right" kind of different. She was agreeable, talented, and, most importantly, she made her leaders feel good about their hiring decision. She was their proof against accusations of homogeneity. In this phase, she was not a colleague; she was a trophy, a pet whose value was in her visibility and her silence.

Her 90-day review was immaculate. The feedback was glowing, praising her seamless integration and valuable contributions. It confirmed what she already felt: she belonged, she was excelling, and her future was bright.

The Shift: The Cost of Speaking Up

The turning point came not from a failure in performance, but from an assertion of personhood. It was the moment she moved from being a passive symbol to an active voice.

She challenged an idea that overlooked a diverse customer base. She pointed out a subtly biased comment in a meeting. Or she simply stopped smiling at a joke that wasn't funny and asserted her own professional opinion with the same confidence as her white peers. She ceased to be just a symbol and started being a full, complex human being with agency and perspective.

The reaction was swift and chilling. The very supervisor who had once been her biggest cheerleader now became her most exacting critic. The tone of feedback shifted from praise to pervasive suspicion. Work that was once "innovative" was now "not quite aligning with expectations." Contributions that were previously "invaluable" were suddenly "satisfactory but needing improvement." The goalposts had not just moved; they became invisible.

The Coordinated Exit: Whispered Meetings and the PIP

What followed was a masterclass in passive-aggressive corporate warfare. The white women in leadership, who had previously presented a unified front of support, began meeting behind closed doors. • Tokenism: Tokenism occurs when an organization hires a small number of people from underrepresented groups to give the appearance of equality. The token is valued for their identity, not their humanity, and is expected to be grateful and silent.

• The Threat of Agency: The moment the token employee asserts themselves, they break the unwritten contract. They are no longer a symbol to be used; they are an individual with power, challenging the established status quo. This is often perceived as a threat, triggering a defensive response from the majority group.

• Weaponized Feminism: This story highlights a specific betrayal: that of white women in leadership. Often benefiting from diversity efforts themselves, they can sometimes become gatekeepers, protecting their own precarious positions by enforcing the very systems that oppress other women. Their solidarity fractures along racial lines when their power is challenged.

Conclusion: Beyond Performance

The journey from "pet to PIP" is a traumatic one that has nothing to do with actual performance and everything to do with power, identity, and the failure of true inclusivity. Companies must move beyond the hollow act of hiring for color and toward the harder work of building cultures of belonging.

True inclusion means creating space for diverse voices to speak, be heard, and disagree without fear of reprisal. It means valuing employees for their whole selves, not just their symbolic value. From the resource-rich hills of the Congo to the besieged streets of Gaza, a confluence of brutal conflict, political failure, and catastrophic hunger is creating a maelstrom of human suffering on a scale rarely seen in modern history. But for an untold number of women, that beacon is a trap. A recent, deeply disturbing BBC investigation has pulled back the curtain on a sophisticated and brutal sex trafficking ring operating with impunity in Dubai, systematically exploiting, and destroying the lives of young women from Uganda and beyond. Their stories reveal a nightmare of deception, coercion, and violence, all unfolding in the shadow of one of the world’s most opulent cities.

This is the story of how a dream is sold, and how it is shattered.

The Bait: A Respectable Job, A Better Life

The scheme begins not in the dark corners of the internet, but in the familiar ones. A friend of a friend. A social media post from a “seemingly successful” acquaintance already abroad. An unlicensed employment agency in Kampala with a convincing website and glossy brochures.

The offer is always legitimate sounding, carefully crafted to appeal and reassure. To work in a supermarket. A job in a retail store. A position in the hospitality industry in a five-star Dubai hotel. These recruiters, often themselves former victims or part of a wider network, offer contracts, sometimes even arranging visas. They speak of salaries that are a fortune “back home”—enough to pay siblings’ school fees, to build a house, to change a family’s trajectory forever.

The price for this life-changing opportunity?

These hopeful women board the plane to Dubai believing they are about to start a new chapter.

It is the last free decision many of them will ever make.

The Trap: Debt, Passports, and Brutal Coercion

Upon arrival at Dubai International Airport, the fantasy evaporates. Their passports are immediately confiscated by their “employers.” The promised job in a hotel or shop does not exist. Instead, they are taken to cramped apartments and presented with a new, horrifying reality.

The debt owed has now ballooned into an impossible, fabricated sum—$5,000, $10,000, or more—for travel, agency fees, and lodging. They are told they must work off this debt. But the work is not serving customers; it is serving men. They are forced into prostitution.

The methods of control are textbook coercion:

• Debt Bondage: The insurmountable debt is used as the primary psychological shackle, making them feel obligated to comply.

• Isolation: In a foreign country without their passports, they have nowhere to run. Their movements are monitored.

• Violence and Threats: Those who resist are beaten, starved, and threatened. Many are told that if they try to escape, their families back home will be harmed.

• Psychological Abuse: Their self-worth is systematically broken down. They are forced into extreme and degrading acts, with clients specifically paying for dehumanizing fetishes. They are made to feel complicit and ashamed, a powerful tool to silence them.

They are trapped in a gilded cage, their bodies commodified, their dreams replaced by a daily struggle for survival.

The Ultimate Cost: Suspicious Deaths and a Rush to Judgment

The BBC’s investigation takes a devastating turn from exposing criminal exploitation to probing potential murder. The report highlights the cases of two young Ugandan women, Monic Karungi and Kayla Birungi, who managed to escape the trafficking network, only to die under highly suspicious circumstances in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

In both cases, Dubai police swiftly ruled the deaths suicides. But the evidence tells a more sinister story.

Monic Karungi was found dead in her apartment with injuries her friends and family say were inconsistent with a suicide. Kayla Birungi had messaged a friend saying she feared for her life and had been threatened by a "boss man" from the trafficking ring. While a toxicology report found a lethal amount of alcohol and painkillers in her system, those who knew her question how she could have obtained them so soon after escaping her captors and pleading for help.

The official rush to rule these tragedies as suicides has raised serious doubts among activists and the victims’ communities. It points to a culture of impunity and a failure to thoroughly investigate cases involving vulnerable migrant women, leaving the haunting question: were they killed to silence them?

A Systemic Crisis, Not an Isolated Incident

To view this trafficking ring as an aberration is to misunderstand the scale of the problem. It is a symptom of a vast, systemic crisis.

Vulnerability by Design: As a 2022 U.S. Department of State report highlighted, a staggering eighty-seven percent of Ugandan migrants in the Middle East had experienced conditions of forced labor. Soaring youth unemployment and economic desperation in Uganda create a pool of highly vulnerable individuals whom traffickers can easily bait with false promises.

• A Well-Oiled Network: This is not the work of a lone predator. It is a criminal enterprise involving recruiters on the ground in Uganda who receive fees for each woman they ensnare, coordinators who handle logistics, and enforcers in Dubai who manage the exploitation. Charles "Abbey" Mwesigwa, a former London bus driver identified by the BBC as a key figure, is just one node in a much larger network.

• A Culture of Impunity: Victims who have escaped report that Dubai police were often unhelpful, at times even returning them to their traffickers. The deep stigma around sex work prevents many from coming forward, fearing arrest or deportation rather than being treated as victims of a serious crime. This environment allows the trade to flourish with minimal risk to the perpetrators.

This issue also extends far beyond Uganda. Investigations by Reuters and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) have documented identical patterns targeting young women from Nigeria, Ghana, and other African nations, lured to the UAE and other Gulf states.

A Call for Light in the Darkness

The gleaming facade of Dubai is built in part by migrant labor. While many travel for legitimate work, this investigation exposes the rotten foundation upon which some of that glitter is built—the systematic, brutal exploitation of the world’s most vulnerable.

Addressing this requires a multi-front war:

1. In Uganda and sending countries: Aggressive regulation of recruitment agencies, public awareness campaigns about the dangers of illegal trafficking, and stronger pre-departure vetting and support.

2. In the UAE and receiving countries: Drastic reform of the kafala (sponsorship) system that ties workers to employers, mandatory training for law enforcement to identify and protect trafficking victims rather than criminalize them, and real, transparent investigations into suspicious deaths.

3. Globally: Continued investigative journalism to shine a light on these crimes, and sustained pressure from international bodies and governments to demand accountability.

The story of the women trafficked to Dubai is a stark reminder that modern slavery is not a metaphor. It is a reality happening in real time, in a global hub of commerce and tourism. It is a story of a dream weaponized, of hope used as bait. And it will continue until the economic desperation that fuels it is addressed, and the networks that profit from it are dismantled—one arrest, one policy change, one exposed truth at a time.

The women like Monic and Kayla deserve more than a rushed ruling. They deserve justice. And the countless others still trapped in the darkness deserve a chance to see light again.

Normally, this space is about mixing a good drink and mixing even better conversation. It’s about connection, laughter, and the small joys we can create together. But sometimes, conversation must be about more than just pleasantries. Sometimes, it must be about the hard things. The things that break our hearts but must also galvanize our spirits.

In this moment, we’re pausing our regular everyday-as-usual, to speak a name that the world needs to hear: Qisma Ali Omar.

Qisma was a 22-year-old woman from Zalingei, in Sudan’s Darfur region. According to some reports, she was a tea seller, pouring warmth for her community. By others, a displaced farmer, a person connected to the land. She was a young woman simply trying to live her life amidst a brutal conflict she did not create.

But Qisma’s story was stolen and made into a symbol of unimaginable horror. Accused of being an informant by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), she was subjected to unspeakable torture and sexual violence, a tragedy captured in a video that has since shaken the global conscience. Her arms were bound. She was hung from a tree. She was killed.

The sheer, brutal cruelty of it is enough to make you want to turn away. To change the channel, to close the browser, to focus on something easier. But we can’t. We absolutely cannot.

Because Qisma is not just one story. She is the face of a systematic weapon of war: gender-based violence. Her death, and the widespread outrage it has sparked, is a stark reminder that in conflicts around the world, women’s bodies are treated as battlefields. Her story has become a devastating symbol for countless unnamed victims.

So, what do we do here, in our homes, thousands of miles away?

How do we process this?

We feel. We get angry. We mourn. And then, we channel that heartbreak into action.

This isn’t about a performative moment of sadness. This is about a sustained rise of humanity. Qisma’s name must become a rallying cry, not just a headline.

Here’s how we can start, right now:

1. Speak Her Name: Break the silence. Share her story. Talk about Qisma Ali Omar. The forces of cruelty thrive in darkness and silence. We counter them with light and noise. Use your voice on your platforms, however big or small.

2. Support the Voices on the Ground: Amplify Sudanese activists and human rights groups like the Darfur Network for Human Rights who are risking everything to document these atrocities and demand justice. Follow them, share their work, and if you can, donate.

3. Pressure for Accountability: The perpetrator has been identified. Demand that international bodies and governments with influence apply real pressure for arrest and prosecution. This cannot be another case of impunity. Contact your elected representatives and ask what they are doing to help.

4. Educate Yourself: The conflict in Sudan is complex, but it is not invisible. Take some time to understand the roles of the SAF and RSF and the profound human cost of this war.

At this very moment, let’s raise a glass. But let it be more than a drink.

Let’s raise a glass to Qisma Ali Omar. To her memory, to her stolen future, and to her profound dignity that her killers could never touch.

✨ The Beginning: East Africa, Mother of Mankind

Around 70,000 years ago, humanity’s great journey began in East Africa. The ancestors of L3 spread from the Rift Valley, carrying the seeds of future civilizations. Within this great lineage, a branch formed—L3f—thriving among early communities along the Sahel and the Nile.

By the time L3f emerged (15,000–10,000 years ago), it was tied to the heart of Sudan and Nubia. These were the lands of pyramids, queens, and kingdoms, where women like Kandake Amanirenas and the imagined Queen Kalasha carried the weight of both crown and cross. The blood that flowed through them was the same blood that carried forward, generation by generation, into my line.

🌊 The Westward Shift: Central & West Africa

Over centuries, migrations carried my ancestors westward across the great grasslands of Africa. L3f became a lineage common among communities in West Africa, particularly in Nigeria and Cameroon. These were societies rich with rhythm, art, and oral traditions—the drumming, the masquerades, the spiritual dances.

It was here that history turned. With the arrival of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, millions of West Africans were captured and transported to the Americas. Among them were carriers of the L3 haplogroup. They brought with them not only their strength but also fragments of language, cuisine, and faith that would survive even through chains.

🌴 Trinidad: The Caribbean Crossroads

My maternal lineage resurfaced in the island of Trinidad, where African, Indian, Indigenous, and European cultures collided. In the streets of Port of Spain, the echoes of Africa met the new world’s chaos and beauty.

Here, L3f’s descendants shaped Carnival, a cultural celebration born from both rebellion and joy. The steelpan, calypso, and Soca carry the heartbeat of ancestral drumming, transformed yet unbroken. In every curry-laden pot, every J'ouvert morning, and every prayer whispered in a Caribbean church, my ancestors found ways to weave old memories into new survival.

🗽 The American Chapter

My journey continued as my family migrated from Trinidad to the United States. Here, the dual heritage of Caribbean vibrance and African American resilience took root in my upbringing. I grew up straddling two worlds—Trinidadian in my food, music, and traditions, yet deeply American in my hustle, ambition, and fight for representation.

And within it all, the ancient L3f thread remained, binding her to women who crossed deserts, sailed rivers, endured slave ships, and built new lives in foreign lands.

👑 The Legacy of L3f

The story of L3f is not just one of migration. It is one of endurance. It reveals that I am not merely a child of the Caribbean or America—I am the daughter of Nubian queens, West African griots, and Trinidadian matriarchs.

My DNA is a bridge between kingdoms and continents, pyramids and plantations, Carnival and Christianity. Through me, the story continues, not just as history but as HerStory.

What does the Bible really say about slavery?

If you’ve ever read the Bible, you’ve hit those passages. The ones that make you pause, lower your screen, and think, “Wait, how does this work?” In Exodus, Leviticus, and Ephesians, there are rules and instructions about servants and masters. For a modern reader, shaped by the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade, this is profoundly unsettling. It feels like a contradiction to a God of love and liberation.

So, what’s the truth?

Is this a divine endorsement of oppression?

Or is there a deeper story being told?

First, we have to time-travel. The word “slavery” in the ancient Near East and Roman Empire conjured a reality far different from the race-based chattel slavery of the 17th-19th centuries. It was often a form of indentured servitude or debt bondage—a brutal, yet common, economic survival mechanism. People sold themselves to avoid starvation or to pay off debts.

Into this fallen system, God speaks. But he doesn’t start with a sweeping abolition decree. Instead, the Mosaic Law does something fascinating: it regulates the institution to radically protect human dignity.

• Hebrew servants were to be freed after six years.

• If a master injured a slave, even knocking out a tooth, the slave was immediately granted freedom (Exodus 21:26-27).

• Runaway slaves were not to be returned to their masters (Deuteronomy 23:15-16).

• Everyone, including servants, was commanded to rest on the Sabbath.

These were revolutionary restraints on human cruelty. The law wasn’t creating a perfect system; it was meeting a broken one where it was, establishing a foundational principle: even those at the bottom of the social hierarchy are image-bearers of God and deserve protection.

This was the first step.

But the story doesn’t end there.

When we turn to the New Testament, we enter the world of the Roman Empire, a society built on a vast and ruthless slave economy. The apostles’ primary mission wasn’t to lead a political revolt but to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. Yet, within that message was a truth so radical it would inevitably dismantle the very foundations of oppression.

Look at Paul’s instructions. He tells slaves to serve faithfully, but then he turns to masters and says something that would have been utterly shocking:

“Masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.” (Ephesians 6:9)

Did you see it?

The “master’s” absolute power is stripped away. He is suddenly under authority. He and his slave answer to the same Master. This levels the playing field in a way no law ever could.

Then there’s the case of Onesimus, a runaway slave. Paul sends him back to his owner, Philemon, with a letter. But he doesn’t appeal to Philemon’s legal rights; he appeals to their shared brotherhood in Christ:

“Welcome him not as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother… Both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.” (Philemon 1:16)

The gospel doesn’t just tweak the master-slave dynamic; it completely re-frames it. Their primary identity is no longer defined by a social hierarchy but by their equal standing “in Christ.”

This is the revolution of the heart. The most famous verse in this conversation is Galatians 3:28:

“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

In God’s new family, the world’s categories of value, status, and power are rendered obsolete. This was a tectonic shift in human consciousness. The gospel introduced a virus of equality into the body of a slave-based society, and it was only a matter of time before the system would become terminally ill.

So, why didn’t the Bible just say “thou shalt not own a person”?

It’s the right question. The answer seems to be that God works within the hard-heartedness of humanity, gradually moving us toward his perfect standard. He first establishes justice within a broken system, then sends his Son to change the hearts that perpetuate the system. The trajectory of the entire biblical narrative is from oppression to liberation, from regulation to reconciliation.

The tragedy of history is that many used the Bible’s regulations to justify their oppression, ignoring its overwhelming trajectory toward freedom. They plucked verses out of the context of the whole story—a story that begins with God hearing the cry of slaves in Egypt and culminates in Christ liberating us from our slavery to sin.

The truth is that the gospel is the most powerful force for human liberation the world has ever seen. It might not always change structures as fast as we want, but it irrevocably changes hearts. And changed hearts will, inevitably, change the world.

In Ancient Greece and Rome, tales emerged of seductive, deadly women, like Empusa, and Lamia, who feasted on blood and spirit. Across Africa, creatures like Asanbosam & Adze stalked the night, cementing the belief that danger often wore a familiar fearsome face.

By the 1700s in Eastern Europe, vampire lore fully bloomed into what we recognize today - the undead, often loved ones, rising bloodied, and bloated from graves, accused of bringing death to the living.

In these stories, fear was not just about death, but loss of control over life, nature, and mysteries we could not name.

Why Blood, Beloveds?

Blood symbolized life, vitality, even divinity - it was sacred currency. When science could not explain sickness, plagues, or sudden death, communities turned to spirits, monsters, and vampires, to fill gaps in understanding.

Misunderstood diseases like tuberculosis & rabies fanned these flames.

Decomposition's unsettling signs of fresh blood, and growth, seemed to scream proof the dead were not resting.

In a world struggling to understand natural cycles, blood also became tangled with women whose bodies moved to sacred rhythms, bleeding with power, life & mystery.

Women, Vampires, and the Fear of the Untamed Power

The most dangerous thing to systems built on control, is a woman who knows her own power. Across time, powerful, independent, sexually free, spiritual women, became the blueprint for vampire figures.

From Lilith refusing to bow to Lamia, turning grief into wrath, the ancient world coded independent femininity as monstrous - to be feared, tamed, or destroyed.

During witch hunts, this connection deepened as women outside norms - midwives, healers, loners - were accused of blood magic, soul-stealing, and vampirism, to silence those who dared to move differently.

Yet, as society tried to chain the feminine spirit with fear, something magical happened - we reclaimed the narrative.

By the Victorian era, female vampires were complex, seductive, powerful - exploring forbidden desire, autonomy, and untamable womanhood, through vampirism.

Today's vamp queens, like Selene, Pam, and Akasha, carry this lineage as visionaries of divine, feminine strength.

Sinners boldly honor this truth. It reimagines the vampire mythos, through autonomy, rebellion, and sacred reclamation. Women are architects of their legend, embodying survival, sovereignty, & sensuality, without apology.

Rich in symbolism and ancestral echoes, it's a love letter to every woman called "too much," who dared to become more.

The Legacy: From Demonization to Divinity

The vampire story is one of misunderstood power, especially feminine power, moving from demonization to divinity.

Blood was not merely death. It represented life. Women were not simply dangerous. We always were the embodiment of creation and transformation (outside of Jesus, of course).

In every culture and myth, the same truth beats beneath the fear: What cannot be controlled, will be labeled a monster (look at white supremacy and racism.)

However, what is labeled a monster will someday be crowned a queen.

The continent we call Europe is named after Europa, a figure from Greek mythology. But here’s where it gets intriguing—Europa wasn’t Greek. She was Phoenician, a people from the region we now know as Lebanon and coastal Syria, who had deep trade and cultural ties with North Africa—especially Carthage and Egypt.

In the myth, Zeus, king of the Greek gods, saw Europa picking flowers by the sea, transformed himself into a gentle bull, and whisked her away to Crete. That romanticized kidnapping gave birth to the name “Europe.”

But if we step back from mythology and into cultural reality:

• The Phoenicians were part of the Afroasiatic linguistic family—meaning they shared ancient roots with North African civilizations.

• Ancient Egyptian records even mention relationships with coastal Levantine peoples, including shared gods, fashion, and ships.

• Some Afrocentric scholars go further, suggesting the name Europa may derive from the ancient Kemetic (Egyptian) terms “Ereb” or “Eribu,” meaning “sunset” or “west”—referring to the lands west of Africa.

So... was Europe named after an African or Afroasiatic woman? The answer isn't cut and dry, but the connections are undeniable. What’s clear is that Africa’s imprint is everywhere—even in the name of the world's most romanticized continent.

Europa may mean “broad-faced” or “sunset.”
Some scholars argue her name could come from ancient Egyptian or Semitic roots:

• Ereb (Akkadian/Hebrew): "sunset" or "west"

• Erpa or Hr-pA (Ancient Egyptian): potential root words related to divinity, royalty, or direction

In this view, “Europe” wasn’t just named after a woman—it was named after the lands west of Africa, told through the lens of myth and conquest.

Art from the Greek and Roman periods often depicted Europa with darker features in some early mosaics and pottery—though later European retellings whitened her image over centuries of Renaissance art.
